8-Hour HAZWOPER Annual Online Refresher Training

8 hour(s) (TimeBoost® option available as directed by employer)
Cost: $95 per person

Do You Need to Take an 8 Hour HAZWOPER Refresher Course?

National Environmental Trainer’s (NET) online HAZWOPER 8-hour annual refresher course is for anyone who needs to keep their 24-Hour HAZWOPER or 40-Hour general site worker certification current in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120.

You’ll need to take the refresher on or before the anniversary date of your initial 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER training. If you have missed a refresher training, attend the next available course. You may need to repeat the initial 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER training if a substantial amount of time has passed since you took the refresher.

The grace period for missing a refresher must be determined by your employer. Ultimately, all employees must be trained sufficiently to be safe while performing their job duties.

Course Content

When you complete NET’s 8-hour online HAZWOPER refresher training, you will have re-certification as a 24-Hour HAZWOPER or 40-Hour general site worker. This course is to be completed as your annual refresher training after having previously completed the 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER training.

You will re-visit how to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as it applies to contaminated site activities and the limitations of PPE, being able to read and interpret a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for chemical safety and spill response activities, and recognizing and distinguishing the 9 U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) hazard class ratings as they relate to chemical safety.

You will also be able to recognize different chemical labeling systems, requirements and standards, interpret the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 704 Diamond for chemical hazards, and define and understand Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste as it differs from a hazardous material.

Additionally, you’ll know the laws and regulations as they relate to hazardous substances, the chemical properties that cause harm to people, the environment and property, and the toxicology of various chemicals on the human body.

The 8-hour course also refreshes your understanding of respiratory protection relating to contaminated site cleanup, the four levels of PPE used in contaminated site cleanup and emergency response and how to implement a proper decontamination sequence. The course topics covered also include regulatory requirements for HAZWOPER workers, drums and other hazardous waste containers, and incompatible chemicals and examples of various incompatible chemicals.

  • Health and safety plans
  • Hazard communication
  • Workplace hazards
  • Labels and placards
  • Personal protective equipment

Physical and On Site Requirements

If you are in an OSHA-approved Plan State, you may need additional training. Plan state requirements are often more stringent than federal HAZWOPER training requirements. While NET’s training course is very comprehensive, additional site-specific training must be taken for certain hazardous materials/environments that may be encountered at different sites. This is an employer obligation.
