Do You Need to Take the DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation Course?

In compliance with U.S. DOT regulations (49 CFR 172.704 Subpart H) also known as HM -181, this U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) training is for individuals who handle, manage, transport, or ship hazardous materials/hazardous waste. This includes employees who load, unload, and handle hazardous materials; select, mark, label, or modify containers or packaging; prepare materials for shipping; prepare shipping papers; are responsible for the safety of hazardous materials during shipment; and vehicle operators.

Training must be carried out in accordance with the Hazardous Materials Regulation (HMR), and every person who performs a function related to the HMR must be trained and tested. Employers must create and retain records of said training as defined in Section 172.704(d). All hazmat employees must receive security awareness training, which is included in this course.

New HAZMAT employees or employees who change job functions must compete DOT training within 90 days and all employees must undergo DOT training at least once every 3 years. Employees can perform new hazardous job materials functions prior to completing training if they are working under the supervision of a properly trained HAZMAT employee.

Physical and On Site Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this course.

OSHA regulations require site-specific training as opposed to attending a generic public seminar class for hands on training with PPE. This means students will train on the actual equipment they will be using as employees and not just a generic piece of equipment.

FAQs

How long does the certification last?

The certification period is good for three years and then the hazardous materials training program must be retaken. If your job responsibilities change, your training needs may change.

Who maintains training records?

Each hazmat employer must create and retain a record of current DOT training for each hazmat employee. The record must include information for at least the last three years. This record must be retained for as long as that employee is employed as a hazmat employee and for 90 days thereafter. The training records must include the following information:

  • Hazmat employee’s name.
  • Most recent training completion date.
  • Description copy or location of training materials used.
  • Name and address of the person providing the training.
  • Certification that the hazmat employee has been trained and tested as required.
