OSHA Accepts Our HAZWOPER Hands-on Simulator®

In an interpretation letter dated February 4, 2009 OSHA stated that our exclusive HAZWOPER Hands-on Simulator® is acceptable when used in conjunction with site specific training. This clarification from OSHA allows an employer to train their employees online for the 40 or 24 hour HAZWOPER courses and then conduct site specific hands-on training on the actual equipment an employee will be using in their job. Please note that site specific hands-on training on the actual equipment an employee will be using is required for both online training and public seminar (open enrollment) classroom training. "The simulator illustrates many of the important health and safety fundamentals regarding HAZWOPER work stated Clay Bednarz, CEO of National Environmental Trainers.

On June 28, 1996, National Environmental Trainers® published the first web-based EH&S course (HAZWOPER 8 hour annual refresher) for commercial use. At that time no other web-based training course existed. Today, they are announcing the availability of a HAZWOPER Hands-on Simulator® - the first of its kind.

The simulator will aid in instructing students on how to effectively wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for 3 levels of protection. Levels A, B and C will be presented. Through the use of 3D interactive modeling, students will be able to simulate the inspection, donning, and doffing of the 3 main levels of PPE. A sequence of events is used to don and doff PPE that can be used at a site for site-specific needs. (An employer can satisfy the site-specific requirement by following the steps in the simulator while the employee(s) interacts with the actual equipment used in their job under the supervison of a trained onsite HAZWOPER supervisor). Limitations of PPE will also be discussed and students can go through a decontamination sequence for all 3 levels.

This simulator is to be used in conjunction with site-specific training that an employer must provide an employee based upon their job function (the individual or employee must receive training on the actual equipment and PPE that they will be utilizing in the field). In our discussions with OSHA it was also conveyed to us that typical classroom/seminar training on the use of respirators or PPE does not fulfill their expectation since they expect the employer to provide site-specific hands-on training on the actual equipment (different models, manufacturers, different body types, physical limitations, etc.).
