Can You Do 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training Online?

40-Hour HAZWOPER Training Online?

Yes, 40-Hour HAZWOPER training can be completed online with National Environmental Trainers (NET). That being said, training does not end after your initial 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.

From the OSHA standard 1910.120(e): “General site workers engaged in hazardous substance removal or other activities which expose or potentially expose workers to hazardous substances and health hazards shall receive a minimum of 40 hours of instruction off the site, and a minimum of three days actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained experienced supervisor.”

This means that in addition to the initial 40 hours of online or in-person training, which should take approximately 40 hours to complete, you will also need to complete field training while being supervised.

It is worth noting that OSHA does not recommend, approve, nor endorse specific trainers or programs. Trainers and/or programs with a verified history of offering courses can provide confidence that their training is acceptable to OSHA, but no trainer or program is officially approved by OSHA when it comes to HAZWOPER training.

During the 40-hour HAZWOPER training, whether it is online or in-person, learners must have the opportunity to ask an instructor questions. NET accomplishes this by allowing learners to email an instructor with any questions.

Learners also must have hands-on experience to become familiar with job equipment and safety practices. National Environmental Trainers offers a HAZWOPER Hands-On Simulator® to help learners become familiar with donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) in a virtual environment. You can view a demo of the online Hands-On Simulator ®.
